Abigail Mainon, the Conservative Senedd Candidate for Alyn and Deeside, has applauded all those involved in setting up and volunteering at Deeside Crisis Centre in Connah’s Quay after visiting the centre yesterday (Monday).
The Crisis Centre, which was established by Flintshire County Councillor Bernie Attridge, has served families and individuals across the area throughout the pandemic.
The Centre provides food and care parcels to those in need and helps source furniture and household items for people who require support, including those setting up home after fleeing domestic abuse.
Donations to the centre come from generous local residents and businesses, who have made the ongoing service from the centre possible.
Abigail attended the centre with trays of tinned goods after Cllr Attridge put out a plea for donations on social media.
She asked the team about the day to day running of their operation, the sources of their donations and about the circumstances of the families who have come to them for help. In the last week Deeside Crisis Centre has given out over 200 care parcels and 1,800 since the beginning of February this year.
Cllr Attridge and members of his family volunteer at the centre.
He said:
“Since we have opened I have personally been brought to tears on many occasions, from a women fleeing domestic violence with nothing but the clothes she had on, to the mum with 5 children who was feeding her kids and going hungry herself.”
Abigail said:
“My visit to Deeside Crisis Centre highlighted the real impact of continued lock-downs and businesses being forced to close on the financial situation of some families and Individuals in Alyn and Deeside.
“The team at the centre told me that people from all walks of life had been in touch for help over the course of the pandemic due to job losses and the income gap related to Furlough.
“With the falling R-rate and the success of the vaccine roll out so far, we must work to get business open, people back to work and endeavour to protect livelihoods as well as lives.
“It’s amazing to see the community pull together in these tough times to help those who have been affected and are facing a difficult period.
“I would like to thank the team at Deeside Crisis Centre for their hard work and the wider community for ensuring they have the donations to make this service possible.”
